Closing the Solidarity Gap? How Ethnic Diversity Alters Who We Are Willing to Support

Citizens tend to be more solidary with ethnic ingroup members than outgroup members. As a result, increasing diversity is often found impede solidarity. Although this perspective well established, I present an alternative argument: Under circumstances that foster intergroup contact, promotes, rather impedes, To test argument, combine survey experiment fielded among Danish students quasi-random observational data on students' classroom composition. find ethnic-majority adolescents are average willing support recipients immigrant and ethnic-minority recipients. Yet, although does not moderate the majority-minority solidarity gap, diminishes erases majority-immigrant gap. further shown, one explanation immigrants in particular face strong stereotypes of being lazy reduces specific stereotype.
